Professional Sock Thief, Loyal Friend, and Very Good Dog

Some dogs chase balls. Some dogs chase squirrels. Mal chased greatness...and socks.

Mal had a lot of good qualities. He was smart, loyal, strong, and he had a real thing for socks. It did not matter if they were clean, dirty, folded, or tucked away somewhere. If there was a sock in the house, Mal seemed to believe it was fair game. Somehow, none of the pictures I have of him show him stealing socks. In every photo, he looks completely innocent, like he would never do such a thing. But anyone who knew him knew better. That was part of what made him so funny. He could look serious and dignified, but he also had this quiet little mischievous side. He was a sock thief, and he was good at it. Mal was also one of those dogs who seemed to understand more than you expected. He could read the room. He knew when to be close. He knew when something was going on. He had a steady, loyal way about him that made you feel like he was always watching over the house and the people in it. He was strong without being mean. Protective without being difficult. Loyal without needing attention all the time. He was just there, in that dependable way good dogs are. Over time, Mal became part of the rhythm of the house. He was there for the normal days, the tired days, the funny moments, and the heavier ones too. He made the house feel more like home. And yes, he made socks disappear. Maybe he liked the smell of his people. Maybe he thought they were toys. Maybe he just enjoyed the challenge. Whatever the reason, it became one of those little habits that made him who he was. The funny thing is, those are the things you remember most. Not just the big moments, but the small ones. The missing socks. The innocent look. The way he followed you around. The way he sat nearby like he was keeping watch. Mal was one of the best dogs a man could ask for. He was loyal, smart, strong, funny in his own way, and completely loved. And somewhere, I hope there is a big comfortable pile of socks waiting for him.
